Edinburgh Skyline – Time-Lapse Watercolor Demo (Limited Palette + Dry Humor Included)
Painting Edinburgh in watercolor should be simple—right? Just a castle, some dramatic towers, and maybe a brooding sky that looks like it’s judging you. Easy. Fortunately, this time-lapse demonstration turns one of Scotland’s most iconic skylines into a surprisingly manageable project using a limited palette, layered washes, and just enough dry banter to keep the paper from buckling out of spite.

Why Edinburgh? (Besides “Why Not?”)
There are few cities with architecture as recognizable as Edinburgh—the spires, the turrets, the Gothic drama, the moody skies that feel like they come preinstalled. Edinburgh basically begs to be painted.
Also, I visited, took far too many photos, and now they must be turned into artwork or they’ll haunt me forever. So here we are.
The Approach: Limited Palette, Unlimited Opportunities to Panic
For this demo, I worked with only three colors—because limiting your palette is a lovely excuse when things don’t turn out exactly as planned. The magic of a minimal palette is how quickly it creates unity across the painting… and how forgiving it is when you pretend a loose shape is actually “atmospheric perspective.”
Techniques used in this time-lapse:
- Layering transparent washes to build light and shadow
- Using gravity (aka “tilt and pray”) to guide softer transitions
- Negative painting to carve out architectural forms
- Drybrush textures for that wonderfully scruffy stonework Edinburgh is famous for
- Lifting highlights because I accidentally painted over the windows… twice
The Time-Lapse: All the Drama, None of the Waiting
This sped-up version condenses hours of painting into a neat, watchable clip—so you can enjoy the progress without the agony of watching paint actually dry. You’ll see shapes develop, buildings emerge, and the sky shift into warm glowing tones that Edinburgh absolutely does have… occasionally… maybe twice a year.

Final Thoughts (And the Part Where I Pretend Everything Went According to Plan)
The finished watercolor captures what I love most about Edinburgh—the sense of history, drama, and that ever-present “golden hour” glow the city sometimes gifts you if you’re really lucky.
Working with a limited palette forces creativity and confidence—whether earned or not. And a time-lapse conveniently hides all the questionable choices I made along the way.
