When I first bought Daniel Smith Blue Apatite Genuine, I had no idea it would become a favorite watercolor paints. It looked interesting in the tube, but I wasn’t prepared for what happened once it hit wet paper.
This paint is pure watercolor entertainment.
If you enjoy watching pigments separate, granulate and generally do things that make watercolor painters smile, Blue Apatite Genuine deserves a place on your palette. It is one of those rare colors that almost seems to paint part of the picture for you.

Pigment Information
Unlike most watercolor paints that are made from manufactured pigments, Blue Apatite Genuine is part of Daniel Smith’s PrimaTek line and is made from genuine mineral pigment. There is no pigment number- only Blue Apatite Genuine.
That means every wash has slight variations and natural texture that are difficult to duplicate with synthetic pigments.
The result is a cool blue-gray that constantly surprises you.
Appearance
Straight from the tube, Blue Apatite Genuine doesn’t look especially exciting.
On paper, however, it transforms into a beautiful mixture of cool blues, soft grays, and subtle mineral textures.
The darker passages become rich and moody while lighter washes reveal delicate blue-gray transitions that feel almost atmospheric.
This is not a clean, smooth blue.
It’s wonderfully messy—in the best possible way.
Granulation
This is where Blue Apatite Genuine earns its reputation.
The pigment settles beautifully into the texture of the paper, creating some of the most dramatic granulation in the Daniel Smith lineup. On rough watercolor paper, every wash develops fascinating patterns that resemble weathered stone, storm clouds, granite, or distant mountain ranges.
If you’re looking for perfectly smooth skies…
…keep walking.
If you’re looking for character, texture, and happy accidents, you’ve found your paint.
Blossoming Performance
One of the first things I test with every new watercolor is how well it blossoms. Some paints explode into beautiful cauliflower effects the instant you drop clean water into a wet wash. Others… just kind of sit there.
Blue Apatite Genuine falls into the second category.
That’s actually not a criticism. This paint is so heavily loaded with mineral pigment that it settles into the paper very quickly. Instead of producing dramatic blossoms, it spends its energy creating spectacular granulation and texture.
You’ll get a little movement if you introduce water early enough, but don’t expect the fireworks you see with colors like Hooker’s Green, or Holbein’s Yellow Grey.

If you’re buying this paint for blossoming effects, you’ll probably be disappointed.
If you’re buying it for its incredible mineral texture and dramatic granulation, you’ll probably wonder how you ever painted rocks, mountains, or stormy skies without it.
Mixing
Blue Apatite Genuine is surprisingly versatile.
Because it naturally contains blue and gray characteristics, it mixes beautifully with earth colors.
Some of my favorite combinations include:
- Lunar Red Rock – Produces gorgeous muted neutrals perfect for rocky landscapes and canyon walls.
- Yellow Grey – Creates soft foggy blue-grays with subtle granulation.
- Hooker’s Green – Knocks back the intense green and produces much more believable evergreen foliage.
- Mayan Blue Genuine – Creates cool mountain colors with incredible texture.
- Burnt Sienna – Produces beautiful neutral grays and stormy shadow colors.
- Buff Titanium – Excellent for weathered stone, beaches, and architectural subjects.
Best Subjects
Blue Apatite Genuine shines when texture matters.
It is especially useful for:
- Stormy skies
- Mountain landscapes
- Rocky cliffs
- Waterfalls
- Snow scenes
- Ocean waves
- Old stone buildings
- Harbor scenes
- Weathered boats
- Fog and mist
- Granite outcroppings
- Winter landscapes
It also makes a fantastic underpainting for many landscape subjects.
Compare To
- Daniel Smith Mayan Blue Genuine – Mayan Blue is smoother and more subdued. Blue Apatite Genuine produces dramatically stronger granulation and blossoms, making it my first choice for textured landscapes.
- Daniel Smith Sodalite Genuine – Sodalite Genuine is darker, moodier, and leans toward charcoal gray. Blue Apatite Genuine is lighter and more colorful while still producing incredible mineral texture.
- Daniel Smith Moonglow – Moonglow is excellent for cool shadows and atmospheric passages. Blue Apatite Genuine offers much stronger granulation and creates more rugged-looking rocks, skies, and water.
- Daniel Smith Lunar Red Rock – Lunar Red Rock brings warm earth tones while Blue Apatite Genuine supplies cool contrast. Together they make one of my favorite combinations for desert cliffs, ancient ruins, and rocky landscapes.
- Daniel Smith Shadow Violet – Shadow Violet creates beautiful cool shadows with subtle granulation. Blue Apatite Genuine is much more heavily textured and excels in skies, mountains, and water.
- Daniel Smith Forest Gray – Forest Gray is ideal for storm clouds and distant mountains. Blue Apatite Genuine adds cooler blue tones and significantly more granulating texture.
- Daniel Smith Cascade Green – Cascade Green separates into dramatic greens and blues. Blue Apatite Genuine mixes beautifully with it for waterfalls, moss-covered rocks, and forest streams.
- Daniel Smith Undersea Green – Undersea Green is perfect for natural foliage. Mixing it with Blue Apatite Genuine produces convincing evergreen forests, cool shadows, and rugged coastal landscapes.
Final Thoughts
Blue Apatite Genuine is one of those paints that reminds me why I love watercolor.
You can plan every brushstroke perfectly… and then this paint decides it has a better idea.
Fortunately, its ideas are usually better than mine.
The spectacular granulation, and beautiful mineral texture make this one of the most entertaining paints Daniel Smith produces. It won’t be the right choice for every painting, but when you want texture, atmosphere, and happy accidents, few colors can match it.
If I were building a landscape palette from scratch, Blue Apatite Genuine would make the cut every single time.
