Holbein Horizon Blue Review: Is This Watercolor’s Most Underrated Sky Blue?

Holbein Horizon Blue is a soft, atmospheric blue that excels in skies, distant mountains, snow, and subtle landscape washes. In this review, I test its transparency, staining, lifting, blossom effects, color mixing, and demonstrate how it performs in real watercolor paintings.

How Does Horizon Blue Compare?

  • Best for Granulation: Winsor & Newton Manganese Blue Hue – Manganese Blue Hue creates much stronger granulation and textured washes. Horizon Blue is smoother and produces cleaner, softer skies.
  • Best for Texture: Holbein Cobalt Turquoise Light – Cobalt Turquoise Light is heavily granulating and semi-opaque, making it ideal for rocks, oceans, and textured passages. Horizon Blue is far more transparent and better suited for luminous skies and distant landscapes.
  • Best for Blossoms: Holbein Marine Blue – Marine Blue creates dramatic blossoms and dark, moody washes. Horizon Blue is lighter, less staining, and produces softer atmospheric effects.
  • Best for Stormy Skies: Daniel Smith Sodalite Genuine – Sodalite Genuine creates beautiful mineral granulation and dramatic cloud textures. Horizon Blue offers smoother washes and brighter, cleaner skies.
  • Best Mixing Companion: Quinacridone Burnt Orange – One of my favorite complementary combinations. The cool blue and warm orange create beautiful neutral grays and colorful landscape shadows without becoming muddy.
  • Best Alternative Sky Blue: Winsor & Newton Cobalt Blue – Cobalt Blue is slightly deeper and more versatile for general landscape painting, while Horizon Blue excels at soft, luminous skies, distant mountains, and atmospheric perspective.

My Recommendation

If your favorite subjects are skies, water, distant mountains, and atmospheric landscapes, Horizon Blue is an excellent addition to your palette. It won’t replace every blue you own, but its soft, transparent washes and subtle character make it a wonderful specialty color for creating depth and light in landscape paintings.
