Holbein Peacock Blue Review: Does It Deserve a Spot on Your Palette?

Holbein Peacock Blue is a bright, transparent blue-green watercolor that excels in tropical water, colorful architecture, reflections and high-chroma landscapes. It’s not an essential primary blue, but if you like intense, luminous color, it’s one of those specialty paints that can quickly earn a permanent place on your palette.

How Does Peacock Blue Compare?

  • Best for Tropical Water: Holbein Marine Blue – Marine Blue is darker, more staining, and produces dramatic blossoms. Peacock Blue is brighter and more vibrant, making it an excellent choice for tropical oceans, Caribbean water, and colorful reflections.
  • Best for Granulation: Holbein Cobalt Turquoise Light – Cobalt Turquoise Light produces heavy granulation and textured washes. Peacock Blue is much smoother and more transparent, creating clean, luminous color instead of texture.
  • Best for Atmospheric Skies: Horizon Blue – Horizon Blue creates soft, delicate skies and distant atmospheric effects. Peacock Blue is stronger, brighter, and better suited for colorful seascapes and high-chroma paintings.
  • Best for Texture: Daniel Smith Sodalite Genuine – Sodalite Genuine creates beautiful mineral granulation for mountains and stone textures. Peacock Blue offers smooth, brilliant washes with very little natural texture.
  • Best Mixing Companion: Quinacridone Burnt Orange – These complementary colors create beautiful neutral grays and colorful shadows while maintaining the transparency that makes watercolor glow.
  • Best Alternative Blue: Winsor & Newton Manganese Blue Hue – Manganese Blue Hue produces softer, more granulating washes that excel in skies and snow scenes. Peacock Blue is more saturated and vibrant, making it ideal for tropical landscapes, colorful architecture, and water.

My Recommendation

If you enjoy painting tropical beaches, oceans, colorful architecture, bright skies, and high-chroma landscapes, Peacock Blue is an excellent addition to your palette. It won’t replace a traditional sky blue, but when you want vivid, eye-catching color with beautiful transparency, Peacock Blue is hard to beat.
