Vilnius Travel Guide: Things To See In Lithuania’s Medieval Capital
Vilnius, Lithuania is a city that begs to be painted. Its warm yellow facades, baroque architecture, unexpected pockets of shadow, and narrow medieval streets create a visual rhythm that watercolor artists dream about. On this particular morning walk through Old Town Vilnius, the light poured across the pavement in long golden streaks—perfect conditions for a fast, loose street-scene watercolor.
This painting began the same way many of my travel artworks do: with a camera slung over my shoulder, searching for contrast, atmosphere, and stories unfolding in real time. Vilnius gave me all three within a single block.
The flag hanging from the building became an instant focal point—diagonal, graphic, and fluttering in the breeze. The long perspective of the street pulled the viewer deeper into the painting, while pedestrians added scale and that essential “lived-in” feeling. As I moved from reference photo to sketch to final washes, the challenge was capturing the soft Baltic light while letting the shadows do the heavy lifting.

Painting Process: Light First, Details Later
To keep the scene lively and spontaneous, I worked wet-into-wet for the sky and upper facades. The soft transitions helped create that early-day glow common in Lithuania’s capital. From there I built the structure of the street using a warm-cool dance of blues, ochres, and grays—letting pigments separate and granulate naturally.
Rather than paint every window or brick, I used the impression of detail, allowing viewers to fill in the rest. This approach not only keeps the painting fresh but mirrors the feeling of walking through Vilnius: light bouncing off walls, figures moving in and out of shadow, textures revealing themselves only when you pause long enough to notice.
The final splashes and drybrush strokes added texture to the cobblestones, suggesting the uneven charm of Old Town streets. These imperfections are what make Vilnius unforgettable—so they deserved to stay in the painting.

Vilnius blends Old World character with a youthful artistic energy. You can turn any corner and suddenly see a gold-lit alleyway, a cathedral dome rising above a jumble of rooftops, or a lone figure walking into a pool of shadow. For painters like me, it’s endless fuel.
This city rewards curiosity—and watercolor is the perfect medium to express its shifting light, atmospheric perspective, and quiet drama.
